Bartlem Photographic Archive

Local historians Alan Heighway and Pete Wilson have been working with the Madeley Living History Project. They have obtained a grant to save between 2,500 and 3,000 black and white negatives and cine film. The archive came from the Bartlem Photographic Studio. It operated from premises in Court Street, Madeley during the first half of the 20th century.

Part of the grant money will be used to purchase a headstone for the unmarked grave, in the graveyard of St. Michael's Church Madeley. It is where the photographic studio founders and proprietors, Charles and Kath Bartlem, now lie.

Shropshire Archives

The photographs themselves are currently being conserved and digitised, by Shropshire Archives. An illustrated book containing a selection of the images is to be published. We are very anxious to identify as many of the photographic subjects as possible. A website ( www.bartlem-madeley.com ) has been set up to display images. If you recognise any of the people or scenes, please contact the team.

If you can identify any of the photographs please contact Shelagh Lewis on 01952 567288. Alternatively, call in to Jubilee House with your information. You may also email your information to:
